Life saving bid to buying life saving defibrillators for Lancashire Schools
Life saving bid to buying life saving defibrillatorsfor Lancashire Schools
This is the report by Catherine Pye for the Lancashire Telegraph
BUSINESSES in East Lancashire are being urged to buy defibrillators for local schools. Hapton-based heart failure charity Pumping Marvellous wants a donation of £1,200 from every company in the area for automated external defibrillators (AEDs) – portable devices which can shock a stopped heart back into rhythm.
Charity founder, Nick Hartshorne-Evans, said: “Twelve young people a week die of cardiac arrests, and of those, eight were undiagnosed problems. “If two planes full of young people crashed every year, would it be acceptable not to investigate it?
“Companies have got the money for this. It’s social responsibility to take up the slack because of the lack of public investment.
“If a business can raise £1,200, they can offset that against tax and tell us where they want the AED. “We will then go into the school with the British Red Cross to teach the first responders how to use the machine, then the staff and the pupils.
“What we do insist on though is that the local community within a one-and-a-half minute walk away, also have access to the AED.
“The figures speak for themselves – without an AED, the chance of surviving cardiac arrest is five per cent, but with an AED, the chance is 50 per cent.”
A letter from Pumping Marvellous will soon be sent to all big businesses in East Lancashire, asking for donations.
Already Manchester-based Co-Operative Funeral Care have donated over £4,000 for three AEDS, two of which will be given to Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Blackburn.
Nick said: “One AED will be at the school, and the other will be at the Harrison Playing Fields in Lammack, which is used by several different schools with thousands of pupils.”
“Part of this campaign is also about taking the fear out of first aid. A lot of people are scared about using AEDs because they think they might get it wrong, but it’s not possible.
“It’s important to know that if the machine detects a heart rhythm, it won’t shock.”

Why Heart Failure Rehabilitation is so important
Why Heart Failure Rehabilitation is so important
Evidence is gathering that cardiac rehabilitation is a significant factor in the stabilisation of heart failure and unfortunately there are many of us who aren’t good at it. That includes patients, the NHS, local government and other health providers. There is no magic wand to this so we decided to help with producing a booklet that helps facilitate physical movement leading onto exercise. The booklet alone won’t do the work but it will highlight the wide variety of programmes and courses available to Heart Failure patients in the East Lancashire area where people get accustomed to the fact that exercise doesn’t have to mean the GYM; it is social interaction, it’s about having a laugh and a joke and who could think of anything better than that as well as being good for you!
We really wish we had the resources to pull this together for all Heart Failure patients but we don’t, however we are unsure what the future holds so we will have to wait and see.
Telehealth in Blackburn and Darwen
Telehealth in Blackburn and DarwenTwo hundred people in Blackburn with Darwen could soon receive new Telehealth Units to help them stay at home longer. Blackburn with Darwen Council and NHS Blackburn with Darwen have invested £500,000 on technology which will promote self-management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Heart Failure.
Telehealth units will be tailored to the patients needs, for example, a sensor can be put in an oven to alert a central unit if an appliance has been left on for too long, or someone who forgets to take medication can be reminded by an alarm linked to medical staff.

LESSONS on how to use a defibrillator and on giving CPR are part of the timetable for a new set of Heart Schools across East Lancashire. Hapton-based heart charity Pumping Marvellous has just completed a session with 70 junior school pupils at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Blackburn, and has plans to roll the course out to Rosegrove Nursery School in Burnley, Mount Carmel in Accrington, St Barnabas and St Paul’s Primary in Blackburn, and another school in Rossendale. As well as equipment know-how from experts at the British Red Cross, charity founder Nick Hartshorne-Evans, has recruited hospital nurses and restauranteurs to encourage healthy lifestyles from a young age. Nick said: “We decided to start this scheme because the cardio vascular profile of East Lancashire, and because we feel the right message has to start early. “We used Rosegrove Nursery as an ideas platform at first, showing toddlers what a raspberry looked like, and that you can make smoothies by combining a strawberry, a banana and some low fat yogurt. Then, the older children are taught how the heart works, the effects of exercise on the heart, the effects of alcohol, smoking and drugs on the heart, and how to give first aid. “We try to make it fun by having very hands-on lessons. With the help of teachers, Nick sets age-suitable homework on how the heart works, and each pupil receives a goody bag of health-related advice. He added: “We now have 70 children who know how to use a defibrillator.”

A fitting crescendo to Heart Month
Pumping Marvellous are very focused around children and young people getting the right education on healthy lifestyles and delivering in a way they enjoy and learn but also having big fun doing it. That’s why we have just added a new “string to our bow” for the charity called Heart Stars, this is still in development but will be ready to launch very soon headed up by a very special young lady Mirren Terry. Coming to your screens as promised!
In our commitment to ensuring children and young people start their lives with the best possible education we have teamed up with on Wednesday 29th February 2012 the East Lancashire Hospital Trusts Heart Failure Nursing Team under the direction of Angela Graves and the Blackburn with Darwen Health Teams under the direction of Mark Campbell to have a day of fun filled education with the children of the Infants and Juniors of The Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Blackburn. We will be educating the children about the Heart and its function, exercise and it’s impact on the heart and the importance of healthy food.
Not only will the children be actively involved all day they will also have some homework pre the event which will include the infants trying to name 10 correct fruit and vegeatable which they will learn before their fun filled day and the juniors answering a questionnaire on how much they know about the heart and the affects of nutrition and exercise. Whilst answering the questions both the infants and juniors will gather sponsorships which will be based on how many they can get correct by the 29th February 2012.
Mums or Dads can also win a full week of juice detox from Soulmatefood one of our corporate sponsors.
Collections on the day will go to the “Heart of Blackburn” 3D scanner appeal. Monies collected through the sponsorship forms will go to your local Heart Failure Chairty Pumping Marvellous.
