Carbohydrates and your Heart

Carbohydrates are the foods you should base your meal around. Apart from bread, rice, potatoes and pasta this food group also includes chapattis, naan, yam, plantain and cous cous. For even better value choose wholegrain versions where you can.

Starchy foods are very filling to eat and the fibre you eat are important for your digestive system. These foods release their energy slowly so they will keep you going until your next meal time and will prevent you from snacking. Make sure you boil, steam or grill these food groups and avoid adding fat.

Your diet is required to be made up of a third of this group. The exact quantity needed varies from person to person. The more active you are the more carbs you need.
